Dumb Money is a new comedic drama retelling the whirlwind story of the rise and fall of GameStop stock prices in 2021. The story centers around Roaring Kitty (Paul Dano Little Miss Sunshine) who believes the value of GameStop stock is being undervalued by Wall Street investors. He took to social media via you tube and reddit to share his opinion and amassed a large following through wall street bets on reddit. Kitty and fellow day traders mostly used the platform robin hood to make their trades and because of their growing position the stock price rocketed which caused the big dogs on wall street to take extreme action.
The supporting cast in this movie is insane, Seth Rogen (Superbad) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America Winter Soldier) play billionaire villains Gabe Plotkin and Vlad Tenev. Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island), Shailene Woodley (Divergent), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Nick Offerman (Parks and Rec), Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Olivia Thirlby (Juno), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket) round out the incredible cast. The film weaves together stories of day trade investors and floundering billionaires as they react to the volatile trajectory of this stock. Some parts of this story were very visible to the public eye, but this story takes you into the thinking of the major actors in these events and how things unfolded off camera.
This movie feels like The Big short in both tone and the topics explored. It feels like a large scale underdog story dealing eventually with intense corruption. The writing, acting, and directing work together well to take you into the events they are telling without adding too much flare or pizazz. Overall this film acts as a financial time capsule reminding us of powerful corruption by rich elites and the potential for unified individuals to challenge the status quo.
