Jojo Rabbit: A Film We Needed

Revolutionary filmmaker Taika Waititi has given us a film that our society desperately needs. Jojo Rabbit is the story of a young Nazi youth who is trying to figure out what he believes is right and wrong near the end of WWII. In a world where the deepest truths are set by a cultural set of beliefs; we are forced to look at the unique perspective of a young boy growing up in  Nazi Germany. The Nazis are generally brought to the silver screen as the despicable villains, but in this unique film the protagonist is a Nazi. Writer/Director Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok and What We Do In The Shadows) begs the audience to ask whether our understanding of good and evil is guided by what we learn from our culture, or is written on the human heart. Jojo must ask these questions when his country and the people he cares about are telling him two completely different things. The story is both audaciously hilarious and incredibly deep as it causes us to think about some of life’s biggest questions. The film stars Roman Griffith Davis as the eponymous Jojo, Roman  gives a fantastic performance as a kid trying to grapple with deep questions while maintaining a childlike innocence. Thomasin McKenzie (Leave No Trace) shares the screen as Jojo’s mysterious roommate. Thomasin does a fantastic job of conveying human emotion while also maintaining strength and hope that doesn’t shatter. Scarlett Johansson (Avengers), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri), Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok), and Stephen Merchant (Logan) turn in great performances to round out a fantastic cast. If you are looking for a movie that is whimsical, dramatic and thoroughly dramatic; this is exactly what you are looking for!
